In a day when many are seeking to draw the world into the church by every method conceivable, we would do well to remember God’s chosen method: the preaching of his Word. During the time of Spurgeon’s ministry, thousands of testimonies were recorded and the stories of these conversions all have similar threads running through them. People being convicted under the preaching the Word, people inviting their friends to church, sharing the Word with their friends, etc. Nothing fancy. Just the preaching and sharing of the Word. Listen to this excerpt of the testimony of Mary Howell, age 27:
“Went to the Music Hall [where services were held], heard Mr. Spurgeon preach from the words ‘Compel them to come in.’ She could not describe her feelings, felt she was blind, lame, and halt. In his sermon he said, ‘Go home and pray to God to break your bars of iron.’ She did so and then began to read her Bible in earnest upon her knees. Opened the Bible at the chapter where Christ raised Lazarus from the dead. She thought if Jesus could raise the dead, he could her. Felt she could only be saved through Christ. Her heart was broken and she has ever since sought the Savior.”
May it be so in our day that thousands would be converted under the preaching of the Gospel.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” – Romans 1:16
“It please God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.” – 1 Corinthians 1:21
